The community of Mamelodi East has been left in shock and mourning following the brutal murder of two young women whose bodies were discovered early Sunday morning in Extension 17. The victims, identified as cousins Tshiamo Moramaga (22) and Baleseng Moramaga (21), were found lying side by side on Sompisi Street with fatal gunshot wounds to the head.
Police responded to the scene around 06:15 a.m. after receiving distress calls from residents who reported hearing gunfire in the early hours. According to authorities, preliminary investigations suggest that the two women were attacked while walking home. A cellphone belonging to one of the victims was missing, prompting suspicions of a robbery, though investigators have not ruled out other motives.

SAPS has since confirmed the arrest of a 38-year-old male suspect, who was apprehended at a local petrol station on Monday morning in connection with the double homicide. He faces two counts of murder and is expected to appear before the Mamelodi Magistrates’ Court later this week.
The Aubrey Tau Foundation has stepped forward, offering a R250,000 reward for any information that could lead to further arrests or conviction of those responsible.
The shocking killings have reignited community concerns about gender-based violence and the safety of women in Mamelodi. Civic groups and residents gathered near the crime scene in solidarity, calling for stronger law enforcement presence and more decisive action to protect women and children.
Family members of the victims are devastated. The Moramaga family described their loss as “unbearable,” saying both young women were full of life and had promising futures ahead of them.
Police are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stop on 0800 10111 or use the MySAPS mobile app to submit anonymous tips.
As investigations continue, the Mamelodi community remains united in grief — and in its demand for justice.
