Celebrated guitarist, composer, author, and music researcher Billy Monama is set to lead the South African Music Legacy Masterclass, proudly presented in collaboration with Brand South Africa, on 6 August 2025. This enriching event will take place at AMPD Studios in Newtown, Johannesburg, from 10:00 to 13:00, further extending Monama’s commitment to documenting, celebrating, and preserving South Africa’s extensive musical heritage.
Building on a series of successful heritage workshops and colloquiums dating back to 2016, this masterclass presents an opportunity for intermediate to advanced musicians, cultural advocates, researchers, and music enthusiasts aged 18 to 35 to deepen their understanding of the evolution of South African music and its significant role in cultural identity. Under the engaging theme of “Rediscover, Learn, and Preserve,” participants can look forward to an in-depth exploration of a variety of essential topics.
The curriculum will cover:
- Creative Management & Administration
- Evolution of South African Music
- Cultural Sustainability
- Marketing & Promotion
- Event Production
A notable highlight of the session will be the participation of award-winning Afro-soul singer-songwriter Maleh as a special guest panelist. Her insights and experiences as a prominent figure in South Africa’s contemporary music scene promise to inspire and motivate attendees.
Reflecting on the mission behind the masterclass, Billy Monama remarked, “We must return to the music of our past to understand our present and shape our future. This masterclass is about legacy – building a community of young South Africans who understand their cultural power and use it to impact society positively.”

This initiative seeks to educate and foster a supportive network among young musicians who aspire to carry forward South Africa’s rich musical traditions. Participants are encouraged to register early, as spots are expected to fill quickly. This opportunity offers an unrivalled chance to gain knowledge from industry experts and contribute to the celebration of South African music.
