Johannesburg, South Africa – 20 October 2025:
In a bold move to accelerate South Africa’s digital transformation, Vodacom Southern Gauteng has announced an investment of over R660 million in network infrastructure this financial year. The investment underscores Vodacom’s commitment to delivering superior connectivity, expanding digital inclusion, and reinforcing network resilience across one of the country’s most economically vital regions.
Driving Connectivity Across the Region
The investment will accelerate the rollout of advanced 4G and 5G technologies across key urban and peri-urban areas — from Springs, Germiston, and Soweto to Tembisa, Diepsloot, Vereeniging, and Alexandra. A total of 67 new base stations are being deployed to extend coverage and bring reliable mobile connectivity to previously underserved communities.
Complementing this expansion, 5G technology is being rolled out to 445 sites, delivering lightning-fast speeds, ultra-low latency, and a transformative digital experience for both consumers and enterprises.
“Our network investment reflects our commitment to meeting the growing connectivity needs of Southern Gauteng’s diverse communities and businesses,” says Ridwaan Soomra, Managing Executive for Vodacom Southern Gauteng.
“Data demand continues to surge as more customers rely on mobile connectivity for work, education, entertainment, and essential services. By expanding our 4G and 5G footprint and enhancing network capacity, we’re ensuring that our customers can stay connected to what matters most.”
Boosting Capacity and Network Resilience
As data traffic continues to soar, Vodacom is upgrading 409 sites with additional 4G capacity using L700 spectrum, ensuring high-speed and stable connectivity even during peak usage. The company is also upgrading its transmission infrastructure to accommodate the growing 4G and 5G data volumes.
Network reliability remains a key focus. In response to South Africa’s ongoing energy challenges, over 1,700 network sites have been fitted with enhanced battery backup systems to reduce downtime during power outages. Additional investments have been made in backup systems at core facilities, ensuring seamless connectivity and operational continuity.
Empowering Digital Inclusion and Affordability
Beyond infrastructure, Vodacom Southern Gauteng is focused on breaking down affordability barriers that prevent full participation in the digital economy. Through Just4You and Just4YourTown, customers can access personalised, location-based offers for data and voice services — ensuring affordable connectivity that meets local needs.
Meanwhile, Vodacom’s Easy2Own device financing initiative continues to make smartphones more accessible, helping customers upgrade to 4G and 5G-enabled devices and participate fully in South Africa’s rapidly digitising economy.
“Our investment goes beyond infrastructure — it’s about building an inclusive digital society where everyone can participate in the digital economy,” adds Soomra.
“Through sustained network expansion, affordability programmes, and resilience initiatives, we’re ensuring that more communities in Southern Gauteng can thrive in the digital era.”
A Connected Future for All
This latest network expansion forms part of Vodacom’s broader vision to bridge South Africa’s digital divide by providing accessible, secure, and future-ready connectivity. With continued investment in next-generation infrastructure, Vodacom Southern Gauteng is laying the foundation for smart cities, connected communities, and a digitally empowered economy that leaves no one behind.
